Coming from the lowlands, KENNON ROAD is one of the three major access roads that lead to the highland city of Baguio. The upward climb reveals a picturesque view of the mountains, lush vegetation, and pine trees as one gets closer to the city. Most of the highway’s stretch encompasses the municipality of Tuba in the province of Benguet. The small settlements along the road, known as Camps 1 to 8, were originally established for the pioneer builders of the road, but have been occupied since by local residents. The Bued River flows along a rocky canyon from the lofty heights, and following this course the road was cut above the river bed. The highway is a toll road, with the lower tollgate located about 2.5 kilometres from the junction at Rosario near Camp 1. The upper tollgate is about 13 kilometres south of Baguio near the Lion’s Head and Camp 6, in Tuba. The steepest portion of the road between Camp 6 and Camp 7 in Baguio is commonly known as “Zigzag Road” because of the numerous switchbacks required. The design of the road switchbacks along that section of the road are similar in construction to the agricultural rice terraces found locally in Benguet and the other mountain provinces of the Cordillera Administrative Region.

Nine Cordilleran police from different municipalities were awarded medals for their cooperation, hard work and perseverance. Two different police medals were awarded to them. These are the Medalya ng Kalingan and Medalya ng Papuri. The Medalya ng Kagalingan was awarded to Supt. Radino S. Belly, Senior Police Officer 2 Geofrey Langbayan, and SPO1 Benafin Dacuyong Jr. The cops received award after a successful anti-illegal drug operation that resulted in the confiscation of illegal drugs worth more than 3 million pesos in Kayapa, Bakun and Tacadang, Kibungan, Benguet last month.

Healthy Eating on #Easter: The Star Apple.
As one story goes: Some menfolk from #Kapangan were on board a Manila-bound bus. At a stop-over, a street vendor entered the bus shouting,”caimito! bili na kayo ng caimito!” One of these men saw and realized what it was and said, “Iyatku nu nganay caimito yan, star apple baw annguy.” There you go, there is no #Kankanaey for star apple or is there? This fruit continues to come in abundance every Easter in my hometown. I can categorically say that it is organic! The tree grows rapidly and reaches 20 m in height. (Wikipedia)

It is also teeming with leaves, which I like, because they serve as a shade or a canopy against the intolerable heat of the summer sun. Most importantly, the star apple fruit tastes delightful, although sometimes, it leaves a sticky feel in the mouth.
