ROMINA was an indentured overseas worker, commonly known as OFW or overseas Filipino worker. She arrived in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in July 12, 2018 under a standard OFW employment contract as household service worker for a family of 4. She found herself the sole domestic help of a large villa of a large family. While there were 4 steady tenants, the home villa served as hang-out for this family of 9 adults and 5 grandchildren. Two adults without children were alternately staying-over or days on end. The married adults with children were regular everyday meal-visitors. She has no day off. She worked 14 or more hours every day. On July 19, just over a week since she arrived, she started to suffer exhaustion, nausea, shaking and cold sweating. She had severe physical pain on the right side of her back, making it excruciating to perform regular chores. Romina’s story is one of 8 stories in this book:

Major Marjorie Mukay is the first female pilot-in-command of the C-130 in a transpacific flight. FRANCES MANGOSING/INQUIRER.net
Major Marjorie Mukay, an Igorota from Kalinga, made history as she flew a newly turned over C-130 freight plane to the Philippine Air Force, en route to the Philippines from the United States on its transpacific flight, thus making her the first-ever KC-130T 5040 (C-130) female pilot-in-command in the Philippines.
“I would like to commend the Air Force who flew the aircraft from Tuscon, Arizona all the way to the Philippines. I heard this marked the first time that a woman pilot-in-command of Philippine C-130 flew a trans-Pacific flight.
Congratulations to you Major Marjorie Mukay, your achievement represents yet another milestone, another step together, another step forward in our long friendship,” outgoing US Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg said at the turnover ceremony for the C-130 at the Villamor Air Base on Monday.
Major Marjorie Mukay, Igorota pilot from Kalinga made history as first C-130 female pilot-in-command
Mukay is a member of the Philippine Military Academy “Sanlingan” Class of 2005 and was also the first woman to be certified as a pilot-in-command in the Philippine Air Force.
“It’s flattering that the command allowed it because meron tayong GAD (Gender and Development), there’s no restriction for females as long as you are qualified you can become a pilot-in-command of any aircraft,” she told reporters.
The GAD in the Armed Forces recognizes gender equality in the workplace.
A pilot-in-command is responsible for the safety and operation of aviation.
Marjorie grew up in a poor family in a remote barangay in Tinglayan, Kalinga, Cordillera Administrative Region. She is the second child of six siblings. Her father only finished high school and attained a secretarial vocational course through self-support. Her mother, however, did not even finish third grade.
But despite this, her parents value education as they regularly review her school progress, test scores, and seat works. Marjorie realized her family’s circumstances at a tender age.
Marjorie aspired to become a doctor but entered the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) instead so that she could get free education and secure a job after graduation. She admits that joining a male-dominated institution will alleviate her parents’ burden of supporting her siblings’ education.
Major Marjorie Mukay, Igorota pilot from Tinglayan, Kalinga
Entering the PMA, she had no inkling of the different branches of the Armed Forces – Army, Air Force, or Navy. Nevertheless, her goal is clear, to graduate.
She then met another female officer wearing a flight suit who ignited her fascination to join the Philippine Air Force and become one of the branch pilots.
Being in the Air Force was never easy for a woman.
Mukay experienced that being a woman in the Air Force is not easy because there weren’t enough female pilots who stay longer in the Wing, particularly the 220th Airlift Wing.
But Marjorie took the challenge regardless even though some people discouraged her for her height and the so-called many “limitations” of a woman. Like, when female pilots get pregnant, they can’t fly for nine months to a year and when they get back, they have to undergo retraining.
Naysayers also declared that women are physically weak so she requires to have a strong body to handle the aircraft in case of an emergency.
Some senior officials would even tell her about the woman’s dubious decision-making ability, but those and other homilies further challenged her.
Major Marjorie Mukay, an inspiring Igorot woman and first-ever C-130 female pilot-in-command in the Philippines
Currently, Major Mukay is the Executive Officer of the 472nd Avionics Maintenance Squadron of the 220th Airlift Wing, Philippine Air Force. She also holds a Pilot-in-Command (PIC) qualification in the Nomad type of aircraft, a smaller type of fixed-range aircraft.
Clearly, Major Mukay has confirmed that anyone can thrive in life if we have perseverance and women can excel in a male-dominated profession. We need to use all the discouragements as fuel for our aircraft to fly even higher!

Yes! Fur babies are allowed! In the Photo: A fur baby at Al fresco dining. Photo grabbed at Ranee House of Curry FB Page.
I’ve been living here in Baguio for more than a year now, and I must say that the selection of local resto is getting thinner and thinner by the day. Aside from the fact that most of them are set up as ‘cafes’ that only offer sweets and a monotonous selection of western foods; pasta, pizza, buffalo wings, etc., the lack of savory and other international dishes are also becoming a drag when deciding what to eat on my cheat day.
Fortunately, last January on one of my jogs at the athletic bowl, I met this sweet guy who happens to co-own a resto around the outskirt of town, Ranee House of Curry.

The restaurant is more than decent, aside from being clean and well-lighted, I can vouch that it’s picturesque.

And it becomes cozier at night, plus the fact that they are also pet friendly.

Their menu consists of a wide selection of Indian food and a few international favorites from their sister restaurant Felipé 25.

Most of their ingredients are locally procured to guarantee freshness; such as their meats and veggies. The head chef and his partners themselves alternately buy most of it from the local market at the heart of the city, 3-4 times a week. But to guarantee the delicate taste of Indian cuisine, their spices and other key ingredients are procured by a middle man from India and they buy it to him/her.
Aside from their food and picturesque ambiance, they are also becoming well-known for their superb customer service. They have wifi and sockets that could be used by customers who would like to work there and tho they only have a few street parking, the owners would definitely help you with it, just ask for their assistance.
In the Photo: A love note from Scout Barrio; Thank you for the GREAT FOOD and EXCELLENT Customer Service. Photo grabbed at Ranee House of Curry FB Page.
The staff of this local resto is a mixture of Baguio locals, Palaweños, Ilocanos, Kapampangans, and Tagalogs. Most of them have worked together for around five years which made their service smooth.
Ranee House of Curry and its sister restaurant Felipé 25 are great examples of local resto here in the City of Baguio that cater to the preferences of both the locals and the tourists.

Commander Liwayway was a leader and commander of the Huk Rebellion in ww2. When she was young, she loves jewelry, clothes and makeup, and she is the daughter of the mayor of her town. When ww2 breaks out, her father creates a resistance group, but only ends in a brutal way. The death of her father who was tortured by the Japanese, inspired her to join the rebellion. She was recruited by the Hukbalahap army, and quickly rose through the ranks until she was a commander. Her army also did not retreat against the Japanese, and they fought the Japanese, who were outnumbered by them. When at war, she also fought for herself, wearing red lipstick and fixing her hair before battle. I think she deserves more recognition as one of the greatest female war heroes in history!
