Corporal Gener Tinangag, an Igorot Marine from Barlig, Mountain Province, was posthumously awarded the Medal for Valor, the Philippines’ highest military honor, for his heroic sacrifice during the Marawi siege in 2017.

Tinangag was part of a Marine unit that was tasked with clearing a building that was occupied by enemy forces. As the unit was advancing, they came under heavy fire from the enemy. Tinangag was shot in the stomach, but he refused to retreat. Instead, he continued to advance and rescue his wounded comrades.

Despite being wounded, Corporal Tinangag single-handedly saved the lives of four Marines, and he even carried one of them to safety on his back. He then went back to the kill zone to recover the body of a fallen comrade.
